Australian & American Open-Plan Living, Adapted for Indian Homes
Families returning from Melbourne, Toronto or Texas ask for the same heart of the house: one big open room where the kitchen island faces the living space and the garden slides in through wide glass. It's a genuinely better way to live — and it needs four Indian adaptations.
The island kitchen meets the Indian kitchen
The open kitchen with a big island is the social engine of the Australian and American home — homework, wine, breakfast, everything happens there. In India it collides with high-heat cooking: tadka smoke does not respect open plans. The resolved answer is two kitchens: the island as the show kitchen and daily hub, and a compact, aggressively ventilated wet kitchen behind it for serious cooking. Everyone gets the lifestyle; nobody's sofa smells of fried onions.
Alfresco living, relocated by the sun
The Aussie alfresco deck — outdoor dining flowing off the kitchen through stacking sliders — works brilliantly in Chandigarh's eight good-weather months. The adaptation is orientation and cover: the deck lives on the north or east with a deep roof, not the sun-hammered west, and ceiling fans plus insect screening turn it from a photo feature into a room the family uses daily from September to April.
Bedrooms as suites
One bathroom per bedroom plus a powder room for guests, walk-in robes instead of wall wardrobes, and a genuine master suite — bedroom, dressing, bath as one zone — are now the default expectation of every returning family. On Indian plot sizes this needs discipline: fewer, larger bedrooms beat the old six-small-rooms habit. Four generous suites serve a family better than six mean rooms ever did.
What to keep from the Indian playbook
Open plan does not mean abandoning what Indian homes get right: the entrance transition (not opening the front door straight into the living room), a puja space with real presence, staff and service circulation that doesn't cross the family's, and guest capacity for functions the Melbourne floor plan never imagined. The best NRI homes are not imports — they are dual citizens.
