Jain's House

Interiors for an independent floor in Hisar: the living room and an island kitchen share one long room in cream, walnut, olive green and brass, with a calm bedroom and a space-themed child's room.

Jain's House is an independent residential floor in Hisar, and the studio's scope was its interiors. The photographs show the living room and the kitchen sharing one long room, so the kitchen sits in full view and the floor reads as one generous space rather than a row of separate rooms.

The living room is arranged around two sofas set at right angles, upholstered in cream with walnut shells wrapped around their bases, with a pair of olive-green armchairs on black legs opposite and a walnut side table cut through with arches. Two nesting coffee tables in black glass and timber sit in bronze-toned frames. The walls are kept plain: a soft plaster finish carries two brass shell-shaped sconces, a tall brass linear wall light sits beside a floating black and white media console, and the air-conditioning cassette is set flush in the ceiling. At the far end, a sliding glass door opens onto a small court planted with palms and screened by vertical bars.

The two halves of the room are divided by a dark column fitted with bronze rods that run from floor to ceiling and hold thin metal shelves for objects. Beyond it, the island has a dark fluted front and cream upholstered bar stools on bronze frames under glass pendants. The kitchen behind is in pale handle-less cabinetry with lit open niches above the counter, and a run of tall dark units, some glass-fronted, holds the microwave and pull-out baskets beside a steel refrigerator. Elsewhere on the floor, a grey-green sideboard with a slatted timber band and a round slatted door panel stands against a white wall of flush panelling with a door set flush into it.

The bedrooms are quieter. In one, a fluted walnut wall takes in a flush door, a coved ceiling frames the room, and two cream upholstered armchairs on timber frames sit in front of a sliding door to the balcony, with a white dresser and an oval brass-framed mirror along the side wall. The child's room takes a theme: a navy wall printed with stars, a rocket and constellations above a white study desk, textured planet discs on the facing wall, planet models hanging from the ceiling, mustard chairs and a low grey daybed, with a sliding door to a balcony that looks into a tree.

Across the floor the palette stays narrow: cream, walnut, charcoal and olive with brass and bronze accents over a polished pale floor, so that the furniture and a few chosen objects carry the colour.
